Change Of Plans

Please read the whole post before jumping to conclusions.

Last week Michelle, the director of the school, took me into a classroom to have a private talk with me about my job. She informed me that I will not have a job at the school one month from that day due to the school’s financial problems. A one month notice is required by law if the employer has worked passed 6 months. It was very hard for Michelle, because I knew it wasn’t her decision and it had nothing to do with me. Hearing her say it though was really shocking. In a couple of seconds, your life changes dramatically. The reason behind it does make since to me, because our school had a big drop in enrollment at the beginning of this year, but nobody saw it coming. It was a shock to me and all the other teachers. I couldn’t even tell the other teachers what had just happened because I was still trying to figure it out.

When I did finally figure it out and realize what I had to do, I didn’t waste anytime doing it. Even if this never happened, I was pretty sure that I would work in Korea for another year. But now I had to decide soon and I really didn’t think too much about it. It was obvious to me that I wanted to stay another year. Also I wanted to take this negative and turn it into a positive. Now that I’ve lived here almost 8 months, I have a very good understanding of what I like and what I do not like. One major thing was were I lived. I am too far from Seoul and the people around me just didn’t match. Now I can be picky on where the job is located. Also since I have almost a year of experience, I can make a considerable amount more of money.

It’s been over a week since and 8 interviews later I’m going to sign a contract for a school that fits me well. Better pay, great location, good benefits, good work environment, and a July start date. Which means I will have time to come home. Yes, come home! Clear your calendar kids. Conor is coming home! Baring overbooked flights or other factors, I should be home for around 3-4 weeks. My initial plan is to work at American Montessori School until my last day, June 10th, leave Korea soon afterwards and return to Korea a couple days before July 12 when my new contract starts. Once I my sign my contract and buy my airline tickets I will be more clear on the dates.
