26 Good Years

April 30, 2006 @ 11:04 pm | Listen to this post

Q-voWoah… last night was crazy fun. A group of friends and I went to Hong-ik University to celebrate my 26th birthday. First we hit a popular bar for foreigners with good music to request. “Radiohead - Let Down” (very under-rated song) was my first choice for the night. Everything was good, but we had to move around so we hit up a night club around the corner. I wanted to use “oh-neul-eun nae saeng-il-i-ya” (today is my birthday) line, but I didn’t need to. Damian and I met a group of 3 girls who were with us the whole night. One of them latched Damian, so I had to share myself with the other two. I wasn’t complaining, but I was spent by the end of the night. I felt like a ran a marathon or something. We made it back home at the wee hour of 5:30am. Good times.

April Birthdays

April 25, 2006 @ 8:47 am | Listen to this post

ClareIt seems like everybody’s birthday is this month. It is the coolest month of the year, especially the coolest day (April 29th), but I’ve had like 5 different people have birthdays in the last couple of weeks. One of them was Clare’s from work. We went to Outback Steakhouse and had a jolly ole time.

The New MLB

April 17, 2006 @ 10:52 pm | Listen to this post

Maybe I should change my last post title to “AL Central Chumps”? Blew the Yankees game and now swept by the Devil Rays. What’s next? Contraction? In Korea I’ve been watching a lot of the English Premiership League on TV, which is the top professional football (soccer) league in the world. The Premiership is the one of 4 pro-leagues in England. They have a hierarchy from top to bottom and all are interconnected. This is where the MLB should listen. Every new season, the top four teams from the previous season are moved up to the next higher league (promotion) and conversely the bottom 4 teams are moved to the next lower league (demotion). The top 4 teams in the Premiership can’t go any higher, so they qualify for the UEFA Cup which is a league for the top professional teams in Europe. This format would revolutionize Major League Baseball from the old fashion monotony we see every year to excitement for all teams and fans. It would also hold teams and players more accountable at the end of the year. Get rid of the affiliations and let each team play themselves. That would at least make an interesting October for the Royals.

Oh by the way, you would think the most popular baseball team in the world would have decent TV announcers calling the game, but they don’t. They are horrendous! They’re even worse then Bob Davis and Split when they say “partner” every 5 seconds.

Ok, maybe it’s only 4 games into the season, but it’s 6:00am here and I’m bouncing off the walls.

3-2 Top of the 8th: “No double-play, no double-play! (pause) YES!”
3-4 Bottom of the 9th: “Finish him! Finish him! (pause) GAS!”

Fresh Air

SophieToday, Clare and I got to take her morning class outside to do some exploring. We went across the street to a local playground and searched for plant life. After that, we just let them play because they’re only 5-6 years old. I snapped some really good shots of them.

For Jon

@ 8:05 pm | Listen to this post

Another tragic lost to someone close to me. He was a great man who always welcomed any of Jon’s friends in his home and paid me a little extra for helping him with his computer problems. Dr. Hof didn’t have to, but he did because that’s who he was. A good man.

Area physician dies in wreck

Kansas City physician David G. Hof was killed late Sunday when his sport-utility vehicle crashed and burned on a western Kansas highway, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Hof, 59, was a Leawood resident and a lung specialist with Medical Plaza Consultants near St. Luke’s Hospital.

Hof was known for his interest in asthma treatment and research. His most recent asthma study was published in the journal Chest.

He was driving home from a trip to Colorado when the crash occurred just before midnight. Highway Patrol troopers were called to a one-car collision. They said Hof was driving east on Interstate 70 about 14 miles west of Colby, Kan., when he fell asleep.

His vehicle veered off the roadway, ran over an embankment and became airborne, then landed on its wheels and caught fire. Hof was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Hof received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and graduated from the medical school of the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1973. He was a clinical professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

A statement released by Medical Plaza Consultants said Hof “went to extraordinary lengths to take care of his patients’ needs, purchasing medications for those who could not afford them, making house calls, lending money to patients, and even paying for insurance premiums.”

With every loss, there is a new beginning. While searching for the news article, I found this article also.

First Dates

April 2, 2006 @ 1:17 pm | Listen to this post

The wonderful world of dating has it’s interesting quirks. One being the first date. Will she like me? Will I like her? I wonder if she’s too old/young for me? I hope she’s attracted to me? etc…etc… One thought I find particularly interesting is “Is she worth it?”. Millions of men everyday have to dish out a decent amount of cash to impress the opposite sex. On the first date your setting a precedent. Blow your last pay check on the first date and you’ll be in the poor house after trying to top it. Make it simple to keep a lean bill runs the risk of looking cheap. Sounds like a good script for Seinfeld.

What do you think the appropriate first date is?
